Winter Driving Advice

Winter Driving Advice

With all this talk about storms lately, we thought it would be a good idea to enlighten our audience as to how to best prepare for dangerous driving conditions. Whether it’s gale-force winds or torrential rain, winter driving can be a challenge for many. In an attempt to make conditions that bit easier we have put together some products that we think will assist your driving experience during the bad weather. We would always advise to avoid driving if conditions are considered dangerous however if its a case that you have to then here are some products to help!

1. Visibility is one of the most important aspects of driving, without a clear view of the road ahead, there is no way of knowing what's in front of you. With heavy rainfall, rain can build up on your windscreen causing a drop in visibility. What we recommend to combat this from happening is to apply one of our windscreen protection products which leads to the water beading off without the use of the wiper blades. We have two brilliant products that work incredibly well in all weather conditions, these come in the form of Soft 99’s Glaco or Nextzetts Rain Away. Both products are applied directly to the windscreen forming a protective layer that water cannot stick to. You can also go one step further and purchase the Soft99 Glaco Mirror Coat Zero, this is applied to your wing mirrors providing a similar result to the regular windscreen Glaco.

2. On the topic of visibility, having a fresh set of wiper blades is equally as important as having rain repellent products on your car. The rubber on wiper blades begins to perish over time causing a reduction in the level of water removed from the windscreen. This causes a drop in visibility which makes driving conditions quite dangerous.

3. Slow & Steady Wins the race

Travelling at high speeds with gale-force winds really is a bad idea. It only takes one strong gust of wind to blow you off course, which could end up with you in the roadside barrier or worse, into an oncoming car! By taking our time it gives us an increased level of stopping distance and assists in avoiding any obstacles that may have fallen moments beforehand.

4. Tyres on Tarmac.

Along with taking your time you should always have a good set of tyres on your car with plenty of thread. Your tyres are the only point of contact between the car and the road so we HIGHLY recommend monitoring the thread depth especially coming up to winter when wet driving conditions occur more frequently. It also reduces the chance of aquaplaning which is known to cause an increased amount of accidents in difficult driving conditions. So please change them before it’s too late and never ever buy part worn tyres, you don’t know where they've come from.

5. Stuck in the Storm. It’s one thing driving in bad conditions but it's another if you actually get stuck out in them. Getting a punctured tyre can happen when you least expect it. With a lot of modern-day cars, the manufacturers do not provide a spare wheel, leaving drivers in a difficult position. We recommend to always have a bottle of Tyreweld in the car to help get you to where you are going. The product fills the tyre with foam closing up any punctures in the tyre itself. While it is not a long term fix, it's the perfect solution to get you to your final destination. If your car fails on your for reason other than a punctured tyre then always make sure to have a power bank in the glove box. Being contactable during a storm is by the most important .

They are just a few driving tips and products we recommend to help you get from A to B safely. As always if you can avoid driving in difficult conditions then do, mother nature takes no prisoners so be smart when making decisions. If you’d like to find out a little bit more about the products mentioned or you have questions in general, why not send us an email at info@micksgarage.ie, our customer service team will be happy to help!
